Mars Approach

We were all amply warned by e-mail at the time: last August 27th the planet Mars would make its closest approach to Earth in the past 5,000 years, and on that night it would become the second brightest object in the sky, looking as large as the full Moon to the naked eye. What the e-mails failed to mention was that it would only appear like that just after sunset in the Middle East. As in the previous time Mars came so close, only the Egyptians were able to fully document this rare event...
